The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced new Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs) for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), including perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS). The MCL for PFOA is set at 4 parts per trillion (ppt), and the MCL for PFOS is set at 4 ppt. North Penn Water Authority and Forest Park Water Treatment Plant meet the MCLs for both PFOA and PFOS.

The recent media coverage regarding PFAS (forever chemicals) in drinking water and other items that we use every day, like nonstick cookware, personal products and cosmetics, has been a cause for concern for customers.

Currently, the Pennsylvania DEP regulations for acceptable limits of PFAS in drinking water are 14 parts per trillion (ppt) for PFOA and 18 parts per trillion (ppt) for PFOS. The federal EPA is proposing a limit of 4 ppt for both PFOA and PFOS. NPWA drinking water meets this criteria.

To put these numbers into perspective, 1 part per trillion (ppt) equates to approximately 1 second in 32,000 years or one drop of water in an Olympic sized swimming pool (660,000 gallons) –  a number which is extremely miniscule and almost hard to comprehend.

To clarify any misunderstandings, NPWA does not offer water service line insurance or work with a preferred vendor to offer this type of insurance. Customers will not receive a solicitation from NPWA offering this service but, from time-to-time, customers may receive third-party solicitations for water service line insurance. It is up to the customer to decide if this insurance is right for them.

We are aware of the recent news article pertaining to algae bloom in Lake Galena and other similar bodies of water. While accurate, it is also important to note that annual algae blooms are not unusual and have been seasonally recurrent in Lake Galena for decades. Our Forest Park Water Treatment Plant, which received water from Lake Galena, was engineered to properly treat and filter this type of algae and all associated bacteria, and has successfully done so for years, meeting or exceeding all applicable state and federal water quality criteria. Following a meeting of the Commonwealth Drought Task Force this week, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has declared a statewide drought watch. While not required, residents and businesses are encouraged to voluntarily conserve water by reducing their nonessential water use. Ways to reduce your nonessential water usage include:

• Run the dishwasher and washing machine less often, and only with full loads.
• Don’t let the faucet run while brushing your teeth or shaving.
• Take shorter showers.
• Water your lawn only if necessary.
• Water your garden less often. If necessary, water only in the cooler evening or morning hours, and direct the water to the ground at the base of the plant.
• Sweep your sidewalk, deck, or driveway, instead of hosing it off.
• Check for and repair household leaks. For example, a leaking toilet can waste up to 200 gallons of water daily.
• Set up a rain barrel to be ready to repurpose rain when it does fall. For helpful information, see this Penn State Extension guide. Or just set out a bucket to capture water in the event of rain, and reuse it to water plants or the bird bath.

With great sadness, NPWA remembers Harry Borchers, Jr., the Authority’s very first employee, who passed away on August 4, 2021.

Harry was hired as NPWA’s very first employee in 1965. Eventually, Mr. Borchers moved into the role of executive manager of NPWA, and served in that role for 26 years until his retirement in 1991.

NPWA is excited to announce the release of its first children’s book, “The Source to Tap Mystery,” which will be available free to children in the community beginning May 15, 2021.

The interactive coloring book is a fun and educational way to teach early elementary-aged children about the journey water takes from the water source to their homes. Children can take an adventure with the book’s main character, a water drop named “H₂Ollie,” and his friends, and complete some fun activities along the way while they solve the mystery of where their water comes from.
